Exterior Waterproofing requires excavation to the footing or bottom of the property’s foundation.
Waterproofing the exterior of a foundation completely eliminates water and moisture penetration through the walls into a basement. For a basement to be waterproofed with no chance of water penetrating the exterior walls, it needs to have protection from sub-surface water for all of the below grade walls. All of this protection must span from grade level down to the foundation footing or a depth deeper than the basement floor.
Exterior waterproofing prevents water from entering foundation walls; therefore preventing the wicking and molding of building materials.
Prior to the 1980’s much of the original exterior waterproofing was actually damp-proofing using a degradable asphalt-based covering. However today, advanced polymer products will completely waterproof an exterior foundation wall. Such polymer materials have a half life extending to thousands of years, which makes it ideal for a long term exterior waterproofing solution. This is in contrast to asphalt and tar-based compounds that are affected by soil pH and break down after 10-20 years, or earlier, thus making that type of waterproofing ineffective over time.
